Music lessons in Crystal Palace & South London

Matthew teaches music at students’ homes across South London, covering guitar, bass, ukulele, piano & drums. Lessons run in Crystal Palace, West Norwood, Sydenham, Penge, South Norwood, Streatham, Tooting, Beckenham, Bromley, Croydon, Clapham & Wallington, which takes in the boroughs of Lambeth, Lewisham, Bromley, Croydon, Wandsworth & Sutton.
Guitar, bass & ukulele are the main focus & are taught to an advanced level, while piano & drums are taught to a beginner level. Alongside the instruments, Matthew teaches music theory, music production, music technology & composition, all of which come up once a student works out what they want to play.
Lessons are relaxed & informal, and topics follow the student’s own interests, with an emphasis on the practical applications of whatever is being learnt. A record of progress is kept so that lesson time is not spent practising, and so that both student & tutor can see what has moved.
Why lessons at home
Travel is the usual reason people stop. A lesson at home removes it: the instrument is already there, there is nothing to carry across London, and the hour starts at the time it was booked. For younger students it also means a parent can be nearby for the whole lesson.
Matthew has taught at students’ homes across South London for over 18 years, which is long enough to know that the students who keep going are rarely the ones with the most free time.
What a lesson looks like
Lessons last one hour, although two-hour sessions are taught regularly & see a steeper learning curve. Weekly lessons suit most students, particularly children, since the structure keeps progress steady, although a fortnightly arrangement can work.
There is no set syllabus. A student who wants to play one particular song, or get through a graded exam, or work out why a chord progression sounds the way it does, is taught along that line. A record of progress is kept so that together you can work towards improving your playing.
Online lessons
For anyone outside the travel area, or for the occasional week when getting across London is not practical, lessons run over video call & follow the same structure as those at home.
